The single most important reason that patients turn to unregulated and unproven "natural" remedies is the fear of side effects from prescription medications. Indeed, the consequences of side effects can be severe and even fatal. However, at no time in our history have we had more information about how medications exert their positive and negative effects on patients than we do today.
Many of the problems associated with the use of prescription medications are the result of too high a dose. This has become especially clear with the development of the field of pharmacogenomics. This burgeoning science clearly helps explain why some patients have significant side effects at very low doses of medications while other patients have no benefits even at the highest strengths available. There are, of course, other factors that may play a role as well.
For a more comprehensive discussion of medication side effects read Side Effects: Predictable, Understandable and Avoidable?. The other modules below expand on various aspects of the rapidly expanding field of personalized medicine and explain its relevancy to patients.
