Shoes and Medications

What could be more critical than the medication you ingest? Yet the choice of medication strengths is very limited. Most pharmaceutical manufacturers only make available two or three different medication strengths and with this limited offering expect to provide good medication benefits to a whole population of people. It is of little wonder that side effect rates are so high.

Take the case of the shoe. No responsible shoe manufacturer tries to outfit an entire population with only three shoe sizes! Typically shoes come in sizes 1-14 and three different widths. Thus there are 42 (3x14) different shoe sizes to serve the people's needs. Even with this wide range of sizes, there is still not enough choice to comfortably serve everyone. Podiatrists routinely customize shoes for people who can't get exactly what they need.

Comparing the availability of the number of shoe sizes with the limited number of medication strengths underlines why offering just three strengths of a medication is inadequate.

Factors that impact the amount of medication you require are:
1. The severity of your illness
2. Other medications you are already taking that may increase (or decrease) the effect of the new medication
3. Your genetic make-up
4. Your body size
5. The health of important organs like your liver and kidneys

If you suspect that you may be experiencing some side effects as a result of too high a dose, consider talking to your physician or pharmacist about getting lower or intermediate strengths customized just for you. Click on this link to read about Personalized Medicine Services.
